The Sound of Exile: Restoring Mahler's 9th (Bruno Walter, Vienna 1938)
This recording captures Walter's last concert in Vienna before the Nazi annexation (Anschluss).
At SVR SOUND we have started one of the most demanding restoration projects of our career: the live recording of Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony, conducted by Bruno Walter with the Vienna Philharmonic on January 16, 1938.
It's not just about music. It's the sound of a culture on the verge of disappearing, interpreted by Mahler's closest disciple at the epicenter of European tragedy.
IV. Adage. Sehr Langsam Und Noch Zurückhaltend
Note the recovery of the texture of the strings and the breathing of the room, preserving the original saturation of the bronze in the climaxes.
Restoring this live recording of Mahler's Ninth Symphony from 1938 is, for SVR SOUND, an act of historical justice. By restoring the "truth" to this recording, we are not seeking a perfect sound for 2026, but rather to transport the listener back to that night in Vienna, where beauty and sorrow merged in an unrepeatable sonic experience.
